Could you Escape from Alcatraz Island?
Alcatraz Island has been pegged as inescapable. The island is not so inescapable if you make it out of the prison, albeit there is the serious possibility of suffering hypothermia if one attempts to swim in the cold waters of the San Francisco Bay. Could you escape from Alcatraz Island? Surely, you can, if you are on a tour and have a boat to bring you back to Fisherman’s Wharf or Pier 39! If you want to get yourself locked in one of the cells, as was shown in the now famous movie starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, The Rock, then you may have to try your luck. Here’s a fun fact: The movie and countless others are fiction and there is no known prisoner on the record to have successfully escaped the jail and the island.
Alcatraz Island Tours
Alcatraz Island is one of the major SF attractions. There are plenty of prisons around the world that are now tourist hotspots but this one is in a league of its own. Many tourists set aside a whole day to visit Alcatraz, as that is what you will need to get to one of the ferries, the journey to the island, touring it and then sailing back to the mainland. There are plenty of Alcatraz Island tours attending to thousands of visitors every day, making Alcatraz one of the most popular places to visit in The City.
You should choose one of the best tours available and preferably you must have a well-informed guide. Docent-led tours are the obvious choice as you would want to know more about the tidbits of the prison and how you can actually try and escape instead of the more obvious historical references. For instance, most tourists love to hear about gangster Al Capone and how he played the banjo as a part of the prison band known as Rock Islanders.
This former habitat of pelicans was the first lighthouse in the region. Dubbed “The Rock”, Alcatraz juts out of the middle of The Bay and is surrounded by water. There was indeed one successful attempt to escape from the prison. John Paul Scott had managed to break free from the prison and also succeeded in swimming across the bay. Unfortunately, the water was cold and he went into hypothermic shock. He was recaptured at the Golden Gate Bridge and was imprisoned again, at Alcatraz.
